System Description

The Model LC-10/TP performs final plating of AT and SC cut crystals at tightly controlled temperatures. The system is adapted from Transat’s well established "Linear Carrier" Final Plating System in which crystals are mounted on a linear transport (Linear Carrier) and automatically final plated. The carriers for the LC-10/TP contain both a heating element and temperature sensor. An aluminum jacket containing both the heating element and sensor fits over the parts held in a carrier to provide a direct heating/sensing path to the crystal. This method allows plating at very accurate and repeatable temperatures. An external PID controller is used both for controlling temperature and providing a signal to the plating system indicating that parts are at temperature. To reduce processing time, parts are typically pre-heated outside of the chamber using the same model temperature controller. The graph below shows the heating of six HC-6 "AC" cut crystals mounted in a single carrier, to 80?C in vacuum (after pre-heating outside of the chamber). Also shown below is a carrier used for holding HC-6 crystals. The bottom portion of the carrier holds the parts. The top portion contains the heating element, temperature sensor, and part masks. Heat transfer and monitoring is done via the top portion, through the mask to the crystal base. Masks are typically modified crystal cans. Measurements of all crystal parameters can be done before and/or after plating. Plating results are displayed real time as well as stored in easily accessed log files.
